MAYFLOWER TRIMARAN - 1. The solar-powered research boat will aim to traverse the Atlantic Ocean in 2021 with no humans on board. 2. Sea trials are due to commence off the south coast of England in late 2020. 3. The Mayflower was officially unveiled on September 16th 2020, the 400th anniversary of the original Mayflower departure.

The Mayflower Autonomous Ship (MAS) project is only possible because of the team that makes it happen.

Rosie Lickorish is part of the IBM research crew and a shipmate based in Southampton, UK. Her role on the MAS project is leading some of the research onboard the Mayflower with a focus on underwater acoustics to listen for and detect marine mammals.

Rosie's two year vision for MAS is that she envisages the sensors onboard MAS to be used to direct the ship to the most interesting areas of the ocean. As an oceanographer and technologist, MAS brings together two of her passions: "It's an incredibly exciting time for innovation in marine technology and MAS is just the start of the journey."

Her biggest fear about MAS is if a sensor or device breaks, there is no one onboard to fix it. They have to put a lot of trust in the autonomy and resilience of the kit, both the equipment and the code running on it.
