Demonstrate your commitment to promoting EDI within your organisation and beyond this, within your TRIG project by explaining current approaches, policies or processes

Electronic data interchange (EDI), is a computer-to-computer exchange of business information in a standard and structured format. Our major subcontractor for full size vessel(s) operates on a one off basis under strict confidentiality. We are not convinced that EDI would be of any benefit, especially where our main business is developing Intellectual Property (IP) and appropriate dissemination of technology, that is protected. We are not manufacturers, with repeat orders to multitudes of companies. Automation may present an unacceptable (hacking) security risk at this stage, and added costs, that are not necessary just yet for us to function efficiently as a small R&D entity.

Should we move from SME status, and/or our associates enter a manufacturing stage, it may be appropriate to move to electronic data interchange to streamline operational efficiency of business processes and communications by exchanging data electronically. Though, we already conduct our operation using email and specification exchange with digital files.

CHALLENGES - To design and prove a practical mechanical system to increase apparent PV deck area.

SOLUTION - To design large PV mounting areas, as moveable panels, to virtually treble deck area

IMPACT - Could provide risk reduced investment for fleet operators looking to meet IMO targets in the short term.

EXPLOITATION - The Foundation shares knowledge via awareness events such as: Jules Verne H2 Trophy

METHODOLOGY - Stages of the project divided into 10 logical parts, to reach TRL3.

According to their copy, TRIG competitions are designed to offer small amounts of funding through a (claimed to be) simple and accessible application process, the questions for which assume innovators are well managed with mature IT administrations and larger turnover - in return for a relatively small project contribution, where: proposals are expected to prove an innovative concept, progressing from TRL 2 (basic research) to TRL 4 (proof of concept/small scale prototype), for which £30k is unlikely to contribute fully for more complicated developments, let alone pay for EDI, given operational and accounting responsibilities, overheads, in (for example) becoming active to develop this technology, to advantage Dft's Clean Maritime Plan. Such imposition may well favour larger concerns with bigger budgets, those who are already active.
